5 Hour Pre-Licensing Class

“Know the difference between a good driver and a safe driver.”

After passing the written test at the DMV, you’ll get your learner’s permit. Your next step is to begin taking driving lessons and plan to attend the Pre-licensing Class, also known as the 5-Hour Class. This class aims to educate permit holders about the Highway Transportation System and road rules. It covers the significance of using seat belts, the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, and observation.

Before scheduling a road test, the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) requires all applicants to complete a 5-hour pre-licensing class unless they have the MV285. It is crucial for applicants to have the 5-hour pre-licensing class certificate (MV-278) at the time of their road test appointment. Failure to do so will result in the inability to take the road test. This class is designed to prepare you for the road test by providing knowledge of essential road rules, safe driving principles, defensive driving skills, and other factors influencing driving safety. Additionally, applicants under 18 must also have the MV 262.
