5 Hour Pre-Licensing Class

Before scheduling a road test, the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) mandates that all applicants complete a 5-hour pre-licensing class unless having the MV285. It is imperative for applicants to possess the 5-hour pre-licensing class certificate (MV-278) at the time of their road test appointment; failure to do so will result in the inability to take the test. Additionally, applicants under 18 must also have the MV 262. This course serves as the primary formal opportunity for applicants to gain knowledge of essential road rules, safe driving principles, defensive driving skills, and other factors influencing driving safety.

Once you’ve completed the written test at the DMV, you will receive your permit. Your next step will be to take the Pre-licensing Course, also known as the 5 Hour Class. This class is designed to teach new drivers about the Highway Transportation System, rules of the road, and provides information about the importance of using seat belts and the negative effects of drugs and alcohol use while driving.

The DMV department requires a 5-hour class before you can apply for the road test (MV-278). It’s important to note that students must have an MV-278 certificate at their road test appointment or will not be allowed to take the test. For students under 18, an additional MV-262 form is required. This form must also be presented during the road test appointment, or the student will not be allowed to take the test.
